I think the first example is brilliant. Why all publishers haven't started doing this is beyond me. I also really liked the It Gets Better example because he's right - there's no need to doing a traveling tour to get in front of people any more. You simply need to post a video. Cool stuff.

I've done some large social media...how do you..."campaigns" in the past. My best advice:

1. Leverage what's out there: Flickr, FB, YouTube, etc. It reduces barriers to entry and, typically, cost. But hey, there are downsides as well...

2. Start with planning a long-term strategy...and think big. You need to know your goals before you can plan your first tactic. Get informed and see what has worked in similar industries, but make your strategy unique.

3. Then it comes down to trial and error - so start small (risk and $'s). You'll soon learn what works for your brand and your audience.

4. Learn and repeat.

What you fail to realize is that M.O.P. actually ripped this song off from Sesame Street. Joe Raposo wrote the song in 1974 and that clip played on Sesame Street at that time.

Not many people know that it was Kermit's exclusion from this exact clip that caused him to sue Children's Television Workshop. That lawsuit bounced around for the next several years, and some argue it was this video that led to Kermit taking the Muppet name he had wisely trademarked to his own show that he started with his previous writing assistant, Fozwald Bear.
